Description
This is our wonderful and majestic American Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), the national bird of the US since 1782. It is standing near its nest in this tall pine tree located in a secluded community of Sarasota, Florida in late March, 2015. This member of Order of Kites, Eagles and Hawks (Accipitridae) is found throughout the entire US, and in Canada and Mexico, is a large bird, with wing-span 72-96 inches. Previously threatened by the use of DDT, the bird now has a rating of "least concern" since the elimination of DDT use. This bird eats fish primarily, but also carrion, road-kill, turtle, and rabbits.
