Description
The Blue-and-yellow macaw (or blue-and-gold macaw), Ara ararauna, is a large South American parrot. The range extends into Panama in Central America, and there is a small breeding colony in Florida. They can reach 1.9 to 3.3 lbs. The naked face, usually white, turns pink when the bird is excited. They live 30-35 years in the wild. They eat nuts, seeds, and fruits, mate for life, and test in dead palms. These beautiful birds are popular as pets, are known as talking birds, and also make various rather loud screams and noises. The one photographed here was at Sarasota Jungle Gardens.
