Description
I saw this ecosystem of sorts at the Deer Prairie Creek Preserve, near Venice, Florida. This dead sabal palm (cabbage palm) retains its lower boots, creating a remnant that looks like the horns of a bull. It also sports a live growth of fern, and if you look closely you can see a squirrel peering out of this home, fully in charge of this lone bull. The sabal (cabbage) palm is the state palm of Florida.
