Description
Pickerel Weed (Pontederia), with the purple flowers, is a very common aquatic plant, endemic to the Americas, from Canada to Argentina, and is found in shallow water and mud. One bee species (Dufourea novaeangliae) exclusively favors Pontederia cordata. Sagittaria (Sagittaria latifolia), the white-blossomed plant, is also known as duck-potato, Indian potato, wapato, and broadleaf arrowhead, and produces edible tubers. This plant is quite wide-spread through the Americas, Europe, Russia, Hawaii and Australia. The tubers and whole plant are eaten by beavers, porcupines, and muskrats. They have been an important food source of indigenous Americans, and the taste is similar to potatoes and chestnuts. They are efficient biological filters of polluted water.
