Artist's Description

This is a view of the island of Surtsey, the result of a volcanic eruption below the sea off the south coast of Iceland between 1963 and 1967. The photo was taken in 1970 from a small plane we flew in, and if you look closely you can see green vegetation already visible. The island stopped growing at about 1 square mile.
