The Water Lily (Nymphaeaceae) are aquatic, rhizomatous herbs. Their beauty has led to their widespread use as ornamental plants. The Mexican water lily, native to the gulf coast of North America, is planted throughout the continent. It has escaped from cultivation and become invasive in some areas, such as California's San Joaquin Valley and can be difficult to eradicate. The water lily is the national flower of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and State flower for Andhra Pradesh, India. It is also the birth flower for July (Info from Wikipedia). The honey bee activity at this pond was intense. Honey bees are generalist foragers, visiting a wide variety of flowers. They pollinate flowers of many different species and genera, benefiting not only crops but also gardens and wildflowers. They have tremendous value as pollinators and through their action provide the seeds and fruit provided for wildlife to eat. Without pollinators such as honeybees, bats, butterflies, and moths, flowering plants would disappear from Earth in a few years (info from Glenn Apiaries). Incidentally, one can actually purchase "water lily honey."
