Description
This is a yellow-crowned night heron. This wetlands bird has a wide range and healthy world population, so has an evaluation level of Least Concern. It can be distinguished from the Black-Crowned Night Heron by the yellow crown versus the black crown, and by the white patch in the midst of the black face, whereas the Black-Crowned has no white patch, and the black terminates at the eye. In Florida I have seen this bird in mangrove swamps, quietly and carefully hunting in the subdued light, as well as right out in the open in broad daylight on public bathing beaches, and on a basketball court a mile away from the nearest water, carrying a twig, presumable for nest-building. This particular bird was on the beach at Longboat Key at mid-morning. This bird and the stacks of tiles have been digitally modified to present an interesting contrast of textures and color, and superimposed on one another from separate photos.
