The pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) is a large woodpecker native to North America. This crow-sized bird normally inhabits deciduous forests in eastern North America, the Great Lakes, the boreal forests of Canada, and parts of the Pacific coast. Adults are 40 to 49 cm (16 to 19 in) long, span 66 to 75 cm (26 to 30 in) across the wings. Adult males have a red line from the bill to the throat, in adult females these are black. The call is a loud, "jungle bird" laugh. This gorgeous creature spent nearly 15 minutes working on one decaying tree branch, chips flying in every direction as it explored for food. This is a male pileated, and was found at the Felts Audubon Preserve, Palmetto, Florida. The image was enhanced with a textured background, based on the Spanish moss hanging from the tree.
Looking for the perfect capture remains my quest. To that effect, roaming about with a motor home seems a perfect fit. My wife and dogs and I will be out there whenever possible to capture the views available, and those unique moments to share with our friends and family. Join us in this quest.
